Material Definition Dialog

Use the Material Definition dialog to add, edit, or delete materials for a specific country.

Access

1. Click Options Materials.
2. Select a country of reference or a category of material from the Materials list.
3. Click Modification.

Each type of material is identified by its name and comes with its own set of parameters. A description generally provides information on the selected type of material.

Elasticity Parameters

• Young Modulus, E - Specifies the ratio of stress to strain.
• Poisson ratio, v - Specifies the coefficient of expansion on the transverse axial.
• Shear modulus, G - Specifies the influence of shear forces on the structure deformation.

Resistance Parameters

• Characteristic / Design - Specifies the value of the strength. The type and value of this strength depend on the code requirements.
• Reduction factor for shear - Specifies the reduction coefficient for shear analysis. The factor value is greater than 1.0.

  The shear coefficient is used during structure calculations when shear deformation calculations are required.

• Limit strength for tension - Specifies the limit strength for tension.
• Sample - Indicates the type of sample for concrete: cubical or cylindrical .

Other Parameters

• Specific weight - Indicates the specific unit weight.
• Thermal Expansion Coefficient - Indicates how the selected material expands when exposed to a change of temperature.
• Damping Ratio - Specifies the damping ratio.
• Annealed Steel - Indicates if the steel was annealed. This parameter is used for steel design verification.
• Thermal treatment - Indicates if a thermal treatment was applied to the aluminum.

Parameters Specific to Timber

Strength and Elasticity Modules (ksi)

• Bending (Fb) - the bending resistance value.
• Tension Parallel to Grain (Ft) - the tensile stresses which tend to stretch the member.
• Shear Parallel to Grain (Fv) - the horizontal shear stresses.
• Compression Perpendicular to Grain (Fcp) - the load compression resistance where the member bears on supports.
• Compression Parallel to Grain (Fc) - consistent stresses applied across the entire cross-section of a member, such as a post, a column, or a strut.
• Modulus of Elasticity for deflections (E) - the average module of elasticity for the member. The Modulus of Elasticity is also know as Young's Modulus.
• Modulus of Elasticity for stability (Emin) - the module of elasticity for beam and column stability calculations. The Modulus of Elasticity is also know as Young's Modulus.

Dimensions

Indicates the standard minimum and maximum Width and Depth for the selected type of timber.
