Categories can be created or edited only in a read/write library. If you work in a single user environment, you automatically have permissions to perform editing tasks. You are automatically logged in to the Autodesk Data Management server on your local drive. If the Content Center libraries are installed on a remote server, you must be assigned Editor permissions. Use Autodesk Server Console to perform any of the editing tasks. Also, you must log in to your vault server.
If you create a category as a subcategory of an existing category, the new category inherits all parameters from the parent category. The inherited parameters are displayed in the Category Parameters dialog box, and cannot be edited. In addition to the inherited parameters, you can create new category parameters.
Tip: You can add custom family properties or category parameters.

- Right-click the parent Category in which to create the subcategory, and select Create Category.
Note: The Create Category option is available only if a read/write library is selected in Library View.
- On the Category Properties dialog box, enter a name in the Category Name text box.
Note: A Category Name must be unique within the parent category.
- To add or edit the category image:
- To add a new image, click Load Alternate Small Image or Load Alternate Large Image select a bmp image to load.
- To edit the current image: right-click the image, and select Copy Image to Clipboard, and Paste the image into your image editor. Make the necessary changes, and save the image as a .bmp file. Click Load Alternate Small Image or Load Alternate Large Image to load the modified image.
- Click the Parameters tab to define the parameters. The parameters list displays all parameters inherited from the upper-level categories and custom parameters (if they exist).
- To add a parameter, right-click the empty table row at the bottom, and select Add Parameter. Enter the appropriate values in each available field.
- To delete a parameter, right-click a row and select Delete Parameter.
Note: Inherited parameters cannot be deleted.
- Click Apply to save changes.
Tip: To view properties of an existing Category, right-click a Category and select Category Properties. Click the Parameters tab to view the parameters.
Copy category structure to a read/write library
Use the Copy Category Structure To command to copy the selected category and subcategories to a read/write library. The structure without any content is copied.
- Right-click a Category and select Copy Category Structure to.
- Select a library from the context menu.
- Click OK to finish the Copy process. If needed, click Refresh to refresh the data displayed in the Content Center Editor dialog box.
Tip: Use the Copy Category Structure to command to create customized categories which include only families you want. Copy categories to use from a read-only library to your read/write library. Then copy selected families, or add your own families in the existing category structure.
