If necessary, press F4 and rotate the part until the face you want to sketch on is visible.
Before you begin
- Determine the purpose of the sketch and create it in the correct environment. For geometry that affects multiple components, create a sketch in the assembly file. For geometry that affects only drawing views, create a sketch in the drawing file.
- To orient a new sketch, when you set the sketch plane, the part origin is automatically projected.
To project the part origin manually, click
Options, and on the Sketch tab, clear the check mark on Autoproject part origin on sketch create.
To project the part origin later, right-click in an active sketch and select Project Origin.
Create sketch
- On the Quick Access toolbar, click New
to create a file.
- In the Create New File dialog box, in Templates, click a folder to specify a standard. Click a template to specify the file type, and then click Create.
- On the ribbon 3D Model tab
Sketch panel, click Create 2D Sketch .
- In a new part file, in the graphics area, click the edge of a plane to set the sketch plane. In a part file with a base feature (the first one in the file), select a
planar face
or
work plane
to sketch on. On curved faces on cylinders, toroids, and so on, create a work plane, and then sketch on the work plane.
In an assembly file, create the sketch on the face of a component, a work plane in a part file, or on an assembly work plane. First select a work plane to set the sketch plane. In the browser, click the Origin folder to expand, right-click, and select Visibility to display a work plane. Click the Sketch tool, and select the edge of the work plane to set the sketch plane.
The xy coordinates align with the selected plane.
- On the Sketch tab, click a sketch command, and then in the graphics window. click points to form the first shape.
For example, click Line
to create line segments and arcs. Double-click the endpoint of the last segment to end the command.
- Continue to use sketch commands to create
sketch geometry
. When finished, click Return to end the sketch.
- Click Save to save the file.
