Copy and reuse a harness assembly

You can create multiple secondary occurrence of a harness assembly using various Autodesk Inventor copy tools such as drag and drop or Place Component. By default, a secondary occurrence is not adaptive and cannot be edited in the Cable and Harness environment.

You can place this occurrence as a rigid body, or if it must adapt to assembly changes and allow for normal edits, you must make it adaptive. Using Make Adaptive transitions it to an adaptive primary occurrence.

When reused, any electrical connectors outside the harness assembly will not update. Wires connected to them will dangle. You can manually edit the wire and reconnect them. If there is a connector in the new harness, you can also add the needed RefDes information to that connector and the wires or cable wires will keep the connection.

  1. Open an assembly that contains a harness assembly.
  2. Create and place one or more secondary occurrences of the harness assembly using the preferred copy methods.
  3. Optionally, place assembly constraints to reposition the secondary occurrences as rigid bodies.
Note: If you intend to make the occurrence adaptive, we recommend that you place constraints after doing so.
  4. To reuse the occurrence, in the browser or graphics window, right-click and then select Make Adaptive.
Note: Any positional assembly constraints added to the occurrence are suppressed.

If needed, enter a new name and location for the harness assembly files.

  5. Optionally, check any suppressed positional constraints in the Model browser and determine whether you want to keep or remove them.
  6. Place assembly constraints to position the new, adaptive occurrence.
