Importing an existing runner system

This option allows you to import a runner system modeled in another study, or third party CAD package, that is saved in ASCII IGES (*.igs); ASCII UDM (*.udm), or Autodesk Simulation Moldflow (*.adv) and (*.sdy) format.

Note: Importing different file formats will import different runner attributes.
  • If you choose to import a *.igs or *.iges file, the process will import each segment of the runner system as a center line and apply the default runner dimensions. If your imported runner system has a gate(s) and sprue, these will be removed from the imported file and you will need to add them manually.
  • If an *.sdy file is imported, only the runner system is imported and not the cavities.
  • Where a sprue already exists, and you import an *.sdy or *.udm file, a secondary sprue is not imported so that multiple sprues do not exist.
Tip: If you want to import a runner system from an *.adv file, you need first to import the *.adv file, and then save it as a *.sdy or *.udm file. The runner system will then be available for import.
  1. Make sure the Mold Type is set to Single or Multi-cavity , as appropriate.
  2. Set the parting plane, and mold layout for the cavity (or cavities) to which the runner system is to be imported. Make sure the model is correctly oriented.
  3. For ASCII IGES (*.igs) files:
    1. Click Properties (Geometry tab > Properties panel > Properties).

      The Edit Properties dialog appears.

    2. Assign default attributes for the imported runner system, and then click OK.
  4. Click Import Runners (Geometry tab > Feed System panel > Import Runners).

    The Import dialog appears.

  5. Click Browse Browse to search for a file that has an existing runner system. Alternatively, you can select a file from the Recently imported runner system section, and then click OK.

    The runner system is imported.

Note: For an ASCII IGES (*.igs) file, the imported runner system is assigned the runner properties you specified in the Runner Properties dialog.
  6. To change the properties of a runner system, select Select, click on the section, and then right-click and select Properties.
  7. For ASCII IGES (*.igs) files:
    1. If necessary, remove any sections of the runner system that do not represent the runners.
    2. Click Sprue (Geometry tab > Feed System panel > Sprue).

      The Create Sprue dialog appears.

    3. Use this dialog to position the sprue as necessary, and then click OK.
    4. Click Gate (Geometry tab > Feed System panel > Gate).

      The Create Gate dialog appears.

    5. Use this dialog to position the gate(s) as necessary, and then click OK.
  8. For ASCII UDM (*.udm) and study (*.sdy) files you may need to reattach the gates to the injection points.
