Labeling Dimensions to Create Parameters

After you dimension the family framework, you label the dimensions to create parameters. For example, the dimensions below have been labeled with length and width parameters.

Labeled dimensions become modifiable parameters for families. You can modify their values using the Family Types dialog in the family editor. When the family is loaded into a project, you can modify any instance parameters on the Properties palette, or open the Type Properties dialog to modify type parameter values.

If a parameter exists in the family for the dimension type, you can select it as a label. If not, you must create the parameter, specifying whether it is an instance or type parameter.

To label dimensions and create parameters

  1. While in the Family Editor, select the dimension.
  2. On the Options Bar, for Label, select a parameter, or choose <Add parameter...>, and create a parameter.

See Creating Parameters. After creating the parameter, you can use the Family Types tool on the Properties panel to modify the default value, or specify a formula, as required.

  3. If desired, select Leader to create a leader line for the dimension.
