Upgrading a Revit Model with Linked Point Clouds

Autodesk Revit 2014 uses a new point cloud engine that requires .rcp or .rcs format indexed point clouds. For models that include linked .pcg format point cloud files, use the following upgrade procedure to index the .pcg files to the new format, while maintaining the origin and orientation of the point cloud file. Using this procedure ensures that the new indexed point cloud files will be in the same location relative to the model as the .pcg files.

  1. Using Autodesk Revit 2014, open a Revit model that includes linked .pcg point cloud files.

    The Unresolved References dialog displays.

  2. Click "Open Manage Links to correct the problem."

The Manage Links dialog opens. On the Point Clouds tab, notice that "Update" displays in the Status column for any .pcg linked files.

  3. Select a .pcg file, and click Reload From.
  4. In the Link Point Cloud dialog:
    • For Look in, navigate to the location of the .pcg file.
    • For Files of type, select Raw formats.
    • For File name, select the file(s) or specify the file name(s).
Tip: Press the Ctrl or Shift key to select multiple files. For raw format files, selecting multiple files is an efficient way of indexing several files in a batch process.
    • Click Open.

A "File Not Indexed" message displays listing the .pcg files that you selected.

  5. Click Yes to have Revit create an indexed .rcp file.
  6. In the Point Cloud File Indexing dialog, under File Locations:
    • For Output project file, click the Browse button, and specify the destination folder and file name.
    • For Temporary folder, specify the temporary directory to be used for indexing.
Note: If you have a Solid State Drive, make sure that the temporary folder is on this hard drive.
  7. Click Start Indexing.
  8. When the indexing process is complete, click Close.
  9. In the Manage Links dialog, click Reload From again.
  10. In the Link Point Cloud dialog, for Files of type, make sure to select Point Cloud Projects (*.rcp), navigate to the new indexed .rcp file, and click Open.
