Generate File Number

Automatic file number allows you to more easily organize your files with systematic naming schemes. When you are logged into a vault and enact the Save As function for a file, you can have the system automatically append a set of predefined characters to the file name based on the scheme configured in the Autodesk Vault client. This feature allows you to enforce file naming conventions and prevents duplicate file names from being created.

You can generate a file number for a single file or multiple files.

The default scheme is Sequential. Use this scheme to number files sequentially. Other numbering schemes can be designed in the Autodesk Vault client. See the Autodesk Vault client help for more information.

Generate Number for Multiple Files

Several Inventor commands create multiple files (e.g., Create Substitute). Some of these files are assigned a name by the Inventor software. When you first save these files, they are saved as a group. The Automatic file numbering feature allows you to override any existing names and select which scheme to use for which file. You may also select a single scheme to apply to all files in the group.

Generate Number Workflows

To generate a file number for a new file, a numbering scheme must be enabled in the Autodesk Vault client. You must also be logged into a vault before performing the Save or Save As function.

Note: Refer to the Autodesk Vault client for more information.

Generate the File Number for a Single File

1. Make sure you are logged into a vault.
2. Save the file for the first time or select the Application icon in Inventor and then select Save As.

   The Generate File Number dialog opens.

3. Select the numbering scheme that you want to use from the Scheme drop-down menu.
4. Change any values in the free text Number fields or select existing options from a list.
5. Click Save to save the file with the new name.

Generate the File Number for Multiple Files

1. Make sure you are logged into a vault.
2. Save the files for the first time or select the Application icon in Inventor and then select Save As.

   The Generate File Numbers dialog opens. The file names generated by the application are listed in the Original Name column.

3. Select the numbering scheme that you want to use from the Select Scheme drop-down menu for that file.

   OR

   Select a scheme to apply to all of the files from the Select Scheme for all files drop-down menu.

4. Change any values in the free text New Name fields or select existing options from a list.
5. Click Save to save the files with the new names.
