Embodied energy

The embodied energy is the total energy required in the making of a part. Typically 70-90% of this energy is associated with manufacturing the raw material.

Publically available data for each plastic material family is the basis for the embodied energy contribution to the Plastic material impact indicator.

To view the embodied energy information, click Home tab > Plastic Material Impact panel > Information.

A dialog appears displaying the Embodied energy rating of the family of plastics to which the selected material belongs. The Alert panel on the same dialog will define any embodied energy alerts.

Embodied energy calculation

To calculate the embodied energy, the amount of energy used to manufacture this part is multiplied by the weight of the part.
