Note:
If you are working in non-default units, you may not see the grid in perspective view when you first open a file. The problem is that the grid is created at the wrong size. Zooming out will show it. To fix this problem, select Display > Grid > 
and click the Reset button. Then, on the view panel select View > Default Home.
