Using the Aspect Ratio Diagnostic

The Aspect Ratio Diagnostic is active if there are triangular elements present in the model, even if the part mesh is 3D.

For models where triangular elements are present, the aspect ratio statistics are presented in the diagnostic dialog. Ideally, you want the aspect ratio for a Midplane or Dual Domain mesh to be 6 or less.

For models where triangular elements are not present, you can use the Mesh Statistics to view the aspect ratios. The recommended minimum and maximum 3D mesh aspect ratios are 5 and 50, with the typical value of 15.

  1. Click Aspect Ratio (Mesh tab > Mesh Diagnostics panel > Aspect Ratio) to open the Aspect Ratio Diagnostic dialog.
  2. Enter a minimum value above which you want to see the elements in question. The default value is 6.
  3. Click Show to see a graphical representation of the elements with aspect ratios within the specified range. The Diagnostic Navigator opens on the ribbon on the far right side. Click the arrows to view the next element with a potential problem.
  4. Click (Mesh tab > Mesh Diagnostics panel > Show) to remove the graphical representation.
  5. Look for elements with aspect ratios outside the acceptable range. Use appropriate tools in Mesh Repair panel to correct the problem. Depending on the specific problem, Global Merge, Merge Nodes or Remesh Area may help.
