Set a Default Analysis Type

In the past, when you imported a new CAD model into Simulation Mechanical, the Choose Analysis Type dialog box always appeared. The initially selected analysis type would be the one specified for the most recently created model. With the 2015 Product Enhancements release, you now have the option to set a default analysis type while importing a CAD model. After you define a default analysis type, future CAD models will go directly into the FEA Editor environment, with the analysis type already set. The following option checkbox has been added to the Choose Analysis Type dialog box:

Use as default analysis type

To specify a default analysis type:

  1. Transfer a CAD model into Simulation Mechanical using one of the following methods
    • Push the model from the CAD application into Simulation Mechanical using the provided menu or ribbon command (for supported applications).
    • Pull the CAD model into Simulation Mechanical using the Open command. Browse to and select the CAD file, then click theOpen button.

The Choose Analysis Type dialog box appears.

Note: This dialog box does not appear if you have already defined a default analysis type. It also does not appear if the subject CAD model had been previously transferred into Simulation Mechanical (unless you subsequently deleted the associated model files). The previously defined analysis type selection is maintained for existing models, and you are not prompted to choose the analysis type.
  2. Select the desired analysis type.
  3. Activate the Use as default analysis type option.

The next time you import a new CAD model, it will go directly into the FEA Editor environment with the analysis type already set. You will not see the Choose Analysis Type dialog box appear.

To temporarily override the default analysis type:

  1. Import a new CAD model into Simulation Mechanical.
  2. Go to Analysis Change Type, and choose the desired analysis type.
  3. Click No when prompted to create a new design scenario. This action will change the analysis type for the current design scenario.

To restore the analysis type prompt:

  1. Go to Tools Options Application Options CAD Import Global CAD Import Options.
  2. At the Choose analysis type during import option, click the Yes radio button and click OK.
  3. Click OK to close the Options dialog box.

The next time you import a new CAD model, you will once again see the Choose Analysis Type dialog box.

Attention: When you create a New FEA model (hand-built) or PV/Designer model, the Choose analysis type field is always visible within the New dialog box. If you choose something other than the default analysis type (assuming you have previously defined one), the default analysis type will be reset. Subsequently, new CAD models will open in the FEA Editor with the same analysis type as the most recently created new model. To restore the previous default analysis type, use the following procedure:
  1. Perform the steps listed in the To restore the analysis type prompt section above.
  2. Perform the steps listed in the To specify a default analysis type section above.

Alternatively, you could create a new FEA model and set the analysis type, within the New dialog box, to the desired default value.
