Assign part marks

The numbering tool automatically numbers Single Parts and Assemblies for the entire model.

The elements are compared by geometry, material properties, coating, and commodity (and behavior). The properties name and lot/phase are not considered for numbering. The Model role is used by the prefix tool to assign prefixes but it is not used directly for numbering.

There parts of a model can get two kinds of marks:

Single parts and assembly numbering can be done both or separate.

Note: Unless both single part and assembly numbering are done together (recommended), then single part numbering must be done first.

During the numbering process beams and then plates are the first to be numbered. In each case, the group with the most elements will get the lowest number.

If nothing is selected the entire model is numbered. When Advance objects are selected only these items are numbered. The results in either case are recorded in the AutoCAD® text window (or recorded in a text file, using a default setting, and can be saved).

To access the command

Ribbon: Output > Part marks:

Command line: _AstM5equalpartsDetect

Number the single parts

  1. Output tab, Part marks panel: Click .
  2. In the Numbering dialog box select Process single parts.
  3. Enter the start value and the increment. By default, single parts marks begin with 1000 and increase by increments of 1.
  4. Select one of the available methods.

For "with drawing number" numbering, define the prefix automatically given by the drawing numbering process. At drawing creation, the first part gets the prefix a001, then b001 etc.

  5. Click OK.

The assigned marks are visible on the Naming tab of the object properties dialog boxes.

Number assemblies

  1. Output tab, Part marks panel: Click .
  2. In the Numbering dialog box select Process assemblies.
  3. Enter the start value and the increment. By default, assembly marks begin with 1 and increase by increments of 1.
  4. Select one of the available numbering methods. For "with drawing number" numbering, define the prefix automatically given by the drawing numbering process. At drawing creation, the first part gets the prefix a001, then b001 etc.
  5. Click OK.

The assigned marks are visible on the Naming tab of the object properties dialog boxes.

Number with standard parts

  1. Create a DWG model with standard parts.
  2. Run the numbering inside this drawing and manually set the standard part marks (and prefixes) as required.
  3. Save this drawing to: ...\ProgramData\Autodesk\AdvanceSteel\2016\Shared\StandardPartTemplate.
  4. To run the numbering in another model, on the Part marks panel, click to open the Numbering dialog box.
  5. Select the Standard Part Template tab where all drawings from the StandardPartTemplate folder are listed.
  6. Click New to attach a reference model.
  7. Select the reference model(s) from the Drawing files dialog.
  8. Select the Single part or Assembly option to use the template for single part numbering or assembly numbering.

Note: Several Standard Part Templates may contain the same objects but with different part marks. In this case the part mark of the template with the highest priority is used. To change the sequence of the templates use the arrow buttons () on the toolbar.
  9. Click Apply.
  10. Click OK.

Assign the single part marks and the assembly marks

Select the post number method from the drop-down list.

  • Assembly group: The numbering automatically assigns the assembly mark to the single part mark of the main part.
  • SP No (for main part=Assembly No): The single part mark for (usually) the biggest part of the assembly is assigned the same value as the assembly mark instead of having an individual single part mark.
Note: With this options the single part numbering and the assembly numbering MUST be done at the same time and Advance forces this by disabling the other check boxes.

Warning

Once a numbering has been performed, it is not possible to change this option.

For another option, completely remove any numbering information using the Ungroup identical parts tool.

  • SP No (for standalone part)=Assembly No: The single part mark for the standalone parts is assigned the same value as the assembly mark instead of having an individual single part

Delete part marks

This tool deletes the part marks.

Note: On deleting the assembly mark only the mark is deleted, not the main part identification or its prefix.

To access the command

Ribbon: Output > Part marks:

Command line: _AstM5equalpartsDelNumber

To delete the part marks

  1. On the Output tab, Part marks panel, switch to the single part or assembly.
  2. Select the elements whose part marks should be deleted.
  3. On the Output tab, Part marks panel: Click .
  4. Click Yes in the warning window.
Note: Without a selection of elements the numbers of all parts in the model are deleted.
