Insert a legend in a paper space layout.

Video Tutorial

If you are connected to the internet, play the video to see how to create a legend. You can also click "Let Me Try" to try it yourself. The steps for this procedure are listed below the video.

Note: This exercise uses the build_map1.dwg map you created and modified in the previous exercises.

To insert a legend in your map

  1. If it is not still open, open your finished map from the previous lesson.
    • Click OpenDrawing.
    • Locate the build_map1.dwg file.
    • Select it, and click Open.
  2. In Display Manager, deselect the Map Base layer, so it will not appear in the legend.
  3. Click the Layout2 tab just below the map window.

A new Layout Tools tab appears at the right side of the ribbon.

  4. Double-click the viewport that contains your map.

When you double-click the viewport, the map is in model space (even though you are viewing a paper space layout).

  5. Click View tab > Navigate panel > Pan.
  6. Pan the map to the left side of the viewport, to make room for the legend.
  7. Press Esc to exit panning mode.
  8. Double-click outside the layout area to return to layout mode.
  9. Click Layout Tools tab > Layout Elements > Legend.
  10. Select a legend style from the list.
  11. Select a viewport for the legend.
  12. Click where you want the legend to appear.

The legend can be inside or outside the viewport itself.

Each layer listed in Display Manager is displayed in the legend automatically, with its identifying color. The items are listed in the order in which they appear in Display Manager.

  13. Save your map.
