parentConstraint

You can view or edit attributes of the parent constraint node in the Attribute Editor. To view parentConstraint attributes, do one of the following:

The following section describes the attributes specific to the Parent constraint node (parentConstraint). See also General constraint node attributes.

Parent Constraint Target Offsets

These attributes let you modify the offset between the constrained object and the target object(s). If you have multiple target objects, each object is listed with individual Translate and Rotate offset values. See Modify parent constraint offsets.

Translate

Enter XYZ translation values for the offset between the target object and the constrained object.

Rotate

Enter XYZ rotation values for the offset between the target object and the constrained object.

Update

If you have moved the constrained or target object(s) in the scene, click to update the target offset values to the current object location.

Key

Click to key the target offset values at the current time.

Parent Constraint Attributes

Lock Output

Specifies whether or not you can directly manipulate an object’s constrained channels. For example, when the parent constraint’s Lock Output attribute is off, you can change the position and orientation of the constrained object without having to move or rotate the driver object.

When a constrained object’s Lock Output attribute is on, you can only manipulate its constrained channels by transforming its driver object. When a constrained object’s Lock Output attribute is off, you can directly manipulate its constrained channels, without having to transform its driver object.

Note:

The Animation Blending preferences affect the default state of the Lock Output attribute.

Interp Type

Sets the rotation interpolation type for the constraint. Interp Type is relevant only when the constrained object has multiple targets.

Average

Averages rotation between the constrained object and its targets.

Shortest

Finds the shortest path between rotations from the constrained object to its targets using quaternion interpolation.

Longest

Finds the longest path between rotations from the constrained object to its targets using quaternion interpolation. This path is in the opposite direction from Shortest.

No Flip and Cache

No Flip caches the current rotation onto the constrained object. Once you select No Flip, you must click the Cache button to create the cache. Cache appears in the Interp Type menu field when there is cached interpolation on the constrained object.

Cache Create button

Caches the current rotation interpolation onto the constrained object and creates an animation curve for the current rotation interpolation on the constraint’s node. Caching reduces the chance of flipping. Only available when you select No Flip.

Cache Delete button

Deletes the current rotation interpolation cache from the constrained object. Only available when Cache appears in the Interp Type menu field.

Constraint Translate

Displays the constrained object’s current position. This value can be useful when specifying the Offset Translate value. This field is read-only.

Constraint Rotate

Displays the constrained object’s current rotation. This value can be useful when specifying the Offset Rotate value. This field is read-only.
