Install mental ray Satellite

Enable network rendering of Maya scenes among several slave computers.

Each Maya license is permitted to distribute mental ray rendering tasks among up to four slave computers. mental ray Satellite must be installed on all slave computers. The mental ray Satellite installers for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux are included in the Maya installation directory.

To install mental ray Satellite on Windows

1. Copy the mental ray Satellite installer folder to each slave machine, and then double-click the installer file (.EXE).
2. Follow the installation steps.
   Note: During the installation, you can click Custom to change the installation directory.

   The default installation directory is: C:\Program Files\Autodesk\mrsat3.13.1-maya2016 .

3. Manually start the mental ray Satellite service by doing either of the following:
   • Go to Control Panel Administrator Tools View Local Services, right-click 'mental ray Satellite 3.13.1 for Maya 2016' entry and click Start.
   • Launch a Command Prompt as Administrator and run the following command:

     net start "mental ray Satellite 3.13.1 for Maya 2016"

   The service is installed as "Manual" by default.

4. (Optional) To automatically start mental ray Satellite each time the computer starts, do the following:
   • In the Windows Service manager, right-click on the service name and choose Properties. Then change Startup Type from Manual to Automatic.

To install mental ray Satellite on Mac OS X

1. Copy the mental ray Satellite installer folder to each slave machine, and then double-click the installer file.
2. Follow the installation steps.
   Note: During the installation, you can change the installation directory.

   The default installation directory is: /Applications/Autodesk/mrsat3.13.1-maya2016

3. Manually start the mental ray Satellite service by entering the following command:

   sudo cp /Applications/Autodesk/mrsat3.13.1-maya2016/com.autodesk.mentalraysat2016.plist /Library/LaunchDaemons/

4. Restart the system.

To install mental ray Satellite on Linux

1. On each slave machine, log in as root.
2. Open the mental ray Satellite directory and go to the Linux directory.
3. Enter the following command (where # is the specific package number):

   rpm –ivh mentalraySatellite3.13.1_maya2016-3.13-#.x86_64.rpm

4. Manually start the mental ray Satellite service.
   Note: Note that xinetd must be installed on the system for mental ray Satellite network rendering to function.
5. Run this command from a shell:

   /usr/autodesk/mrsat3.13.1-maya2016-x64/bin/netsetup_satellite
