Temporary Dimensions - Essential Skill Video

Learn how to use temporary dimensions while drawing objects or when an object is selected.

As elements are added to the model, temporary dimensions report the position of the element in relation to other elements already in the model, helping you position the elements in your model. You can also use temporary dimensions after an element has been placed. An object is selected and the temporary dimensions are displayed. Adjust the witness lines of the temporary dimension to measure to something that is important to your design intent. The temporary dimensions can also be turned into permanent dimensions saving you time documenting your project.

Terms and Concepts

Term/Concept Definition
Temporary Dimension Temporary dimensions are displayed as you draw elements or when elements are selected in the view. Temporary dimension settings can help control what is dimensioned by default, such as a wall face or wall centerline. Witness lines can be manually adjusted if the temporary dimension needs to measure to an alternate location. Adjustments to a temporary dimension will be remembered when the object is selected again.
Temporary Dimension Lines extending from the temporary dimension to the object being dimensioned. Use the grip control to drag the witness line to another location or object if required.
Permanent Dimension Click the dimension icon located near a temporary dimension to change it to a permanent dimension annotation in the view. Permanent dimensions will not disappear when the object is de-selected and can be used for documenting your project.
Snap Increment As you draw Revit will snap the cursor to preset increments. Set the Snap Increments from the Snaps dialog launched from the Manage tab of the ribbon. The snap increment values will be applied as you zoom in and out in a view. When zoomed out far, the largest snap increment will be used When zoomed in very close, the smallest snap increment will be used.
