Commercial installations of Autodesk® CFD use a network license. A network license supports a specified number of users who are connected to a network. The Network License Manager is installed on one or more servers on the network to manage the distribution of licenses to users.
The license file and Network License Manager only need to be installed on the license server computer. If you are installing only the Autodesk® CFD software, and not the Network License Manager, you can proceed to the Installation topic.
Note: Node-locked licensing is available for some Educational installations.
Perform the following steps to configure the network license for Autodesk® CFD:
1. Determine the License Server Computer
The Network License Manager (NLM) can be installed on the same computer as Autodesk® CFD or on a dedicated license server computer.
If your site has a single license of Autodesk® CFD, it is probably most convenient to install the NLM and Autodesk® CFD on the same computer. Check with your IT Administrator first, however.
If your site has multiple licenses of Autodesk® CFD, it is good practice (although not required) to install the NLM on a separate computer that does not have CFD installed on it. This often makes managing the license more convenient.
2. Request your Network License File
Autodesk® CFD is delivered as a collection of Functional and CAD Interface modules. Each module is licensed in a separate section of the license file called an INCREMENT. To create the Autodesk® CFD license file, you will use E-Registration to request the INCREMENT for each module, and assemble them together into a single license file.
When you purchased Autodesk® CFD, you received a list of Serial Numbers and product codes for the modules that you ordered. Each Serial number corresponds to an individual Functionality or CAD Interface module.
The following steps describe how to request the license for each purchased module and how to assemble the INCREMENTS together to form the final Autodesk® CFD license file.
Information you will need to request your licenses:
- The serial numbers for the purchased modules of Autodesk® CFD.
- The serial numbers and product keys are e-mailed to the main contact on the original order when Autodesk® CFD is purchased.
- The Host Name and Host ID of the License Server computer. To obtain the host name and ID at the Windows command prompt:
- At the Windows command prompt, enter ipconfig /all
- Record the Host Name and Physical Address line. Eliminate dashes from the physical address. This is your twelve-character host ID.
Note: If your server has more than one network adapter, select the one that corresponds to a physical network adapter. View the Descrisption field above each physical address. If there is more than one physical network adapter, it does not matter which one you use. Devices such as VPN adapters, PPP adapters, and modems are not valid.
- Close the Windows command prompt.
To request the license for each purchased module:
- Go to www.autodesk.com/register.
- If you have an account, log in with your User ID and Password, and click Log In.
- If you do not have an account, click Create User ID Now to create one.
- If prompted to choose an account, select the appropriate account from the list, and click Next.
Enter the product operating system and Serial number:
- Select Windows as the Product's Operating System.
- Input the Product Serial Number for one of your purchased modules.
- Click Next.
Enter information about the license server computer. This is the computer on which you plan to install the Network License Manager:
- Select the Network server type.
- Enter the host name of the license server computer(s) in the Server host name field(s).
- Enter the Host ID in the Server ID field(s). (Do not include dashes.)
- Click Next.
The license for the module is created.
- Save the license by clicking Save License File. You will be prompted to specify a location on the local computer.
Note: The license file is automatically sent to the e-mail address associated with your account.
- To request the license for the next module, click Register and activate more products.
- For each additional module you have purchased, be sure to enter the correct Host Name and Host ID of the license server machine. (You should enter the same Host Name and Host ID for each license module.)
- If an incorrect value is entered for a module, that module will not function. To change the Host ID for a license, you will have to request the license again for the serial number.
To Create the Autodesk® CFD license file:
After you have obtained the licenses for all of your purchased modules, you need to assemble them into a single license file to enable Autodesk® CFD.
Note: The order of the module licenses segments within the license file does not matter.
A suggested technique is to rename one of the license files to a name that will be easy to remember and copy the INCREMENT section of the other licenses into it.
- For this procedure, we will rename the file called SCFD2016enlicense.lic to CFDlicense.lic. You can use any name you want, as long as the extension is ".lic".
- Open CFDlicense.lic in a text editor.
- Open one of the other module license files in a text editor. Copy everything below the SERVER, USE_SERVER, and VENDOR lines into CFDlicense.lic.
Note: Do not copy the SERVER, USE_SERVER, and VENDOR lines. The final license file should only have one instance of each of these lines.
- Repeat step 3 with the other module license files.
Note that your license file may not have the same number of sections shown in the example below. The number of sections is based on the number of modules purchased.
Note: Note: Save the final license file in the Network License Manager installation directory of the license server computer. (The default directory is Program Files\Autodesk License Manager.)
For reference, the complete list of product codes is listed the Product Code List topic.
License modules have a designated Product Code, and when a module license file is saved, the default name is based on this code. Click here for a list of the module product codes.
3. Install the Network License Manager
It is a good idea to install the Network License Manager on the license server computer before installing Autodesk® CFD on individual user computers.
To install the Network License Manager on a dedicated License Server Computer:
- Open the installation DVD, and run the Network License Manager.cmd script. This will run the Network License Manager installer.
If you are installing from an electronic download instead of the DVD, run the installation executable. After the files have been extracted, navigate to the destination folder that you selected when you started the file extraction. (The default is typically under C:\Autodesk.) Run the Network License Manager.cmd script.
- Follow the steps in the Installation Wizard to complete the installation.
4. Configure the License Manager
To configure a license server with LMTOOLS
You should be logged in with Administrator rights when working with the LMTOOLS utility.
- Click Start > All Programs > Autodesk > Network License Manager > LMTOOLS Utility.
- In the LMTOOLS utility, on the Service/License File tab, make sure the Configure Using Services option is active.
- Click the Config Services tab.
- In the Service Name list, select the service name you want to use to manage licenses.
By default, the service name is Flexlm Service 1. If FLEXnet® is managing other software on your computer in addition to Autodesk®, you can change the service name to avoid confusion. For example, you can rename Flexlm Service 1 to Autodesk Server1.
Note: If you have more than one software vendor using FLEXnet for license management, the Service Name list contains more than one option. Make sure that only one Autodesk service is listed.
- In the Path to Lmgrd.exe File field, enter the path to the Network License Manager daemon (lmgrd.exe), or click Browse to locate the file.
By default, this daemon is installed in the C:\Program Files\Autodesk Network License Manager folder.
- In the Path to the License File box, locate or enter the path.
This is the path to the license file obtained through autodesk.com or the location where you placed the license file if you obtained it offline.
- In the Path to the Debug Log File box, enter a path to create a debug log, or click Browse to locate an existing log file.
It is recommended that you save to the C:\Program Files\Autodesk Network License Manager folder. The log file must have a .log file extension. For new log files, you must enter the .log extension manually.
- To run lmgrd.exe as a service, select Use Services.
- To start lmgrd.exe automatically when the system starts, select Start Server at Power Up
- Click Save Service to save the new configuration under the service name you selected in step 4. Click Yes when prompted if you would like to save the settings to the service.
- Click the Start/Stop/Reread tab and do one of the following:
- If a service has not yet been defined for Autodesk, click Start Server to start the license server.
- If a service for Autodesk is already defined and running, click ReRead License File to refresh the Network License Manager with any changes made to the license file or options file.
The license server starts running and is ready to respond to client requests.
- Close LMTOOLS.
Note: The Network License Manager should be configured prior to installing Autodesk® CFD.
