Phase 1: Analysis of the Original Geometry
- This tutorial uses the model created in the Support Beam CAD Model (for SimStudio Tools Workflow) tutorial. If this tutorial was not completed, use the Meshed Support Beam.ach archive file in your tutorial models folder.
- The beam is made of Steel (ASTM-A36).
- The beam is constrained using 3D spring supports at the two end surfaces on the bottom of the beam. The supports have a stiffness of 100,000 N/mm each and act against translation in all three global directions (X, Y, and Z).
- A normal force of 250,000 N is applied to the middle surface of the top of the beam.
- Run the simulation.
- Review the displacement and von Mises stress results.
Note: The target maximum displacement is 0.5 mm and the target maximum von Mises stress is 90 N/mm2, which is a little more than one-third of the yield strength. The analysis of the original geometry reveals that both of these criteria have been exceeded.
Phase 2: Geometry Modification using SimStudio Tools
- Pass the model to SimStudio Tools for CAD geometry modification.
- In an attempt to decrease the displacement and stress to allowable limits, increase the height of the beam by 60mm. Do this in such a way that the holes through the web remain centered vertically.
- Return the modified model to Simulation Mechanical.
Phase 3: Re-analyze and Review Results for the Modified Geometry
- Rerun the simulation.
- Verify that the displacement and von Mises stress results are now at or below the target limits.
