To Update or Edit a Derived Part

Update and edit derived parts and assemblies. You can also update a part manually or defer updates.

When a base part or assembly is modified, the derived component appears with a red lightning bolt in the browser, indicating that it is out of date. To incorporate changes, you must update the derived part; it is not updated automatically.

Manually Update a Part

You may need to update a derived part if it has disabled links. For example, when the base part is a derived assembly that was marked as a Substitute LOD in the owning assembly, the update links are disabled.

  1. Open the part file on disk. In the browser, the part file node is represented by the substitute part icon and the update node is represented by the disabled link icon.
  2. Navigate to the top of the browser, right-click the part node and choose Check for Updates from the context menu.
  3. If the derived assembly is out of date, a message prompts you to update.

  2. The original file is opened and you can make your changes.
  3. To reflect your changes in the derived part, update the file containing the derived part or assembly.
