For most of the tasks you perform in the Maintenance workspace, you begin by generating your map with the geometry stored in the enterprise industry model . When you generate your map, AutoCAD Map 3D applies a display model to the geometry.
The display model determines how the geometry appears in the map. If your Administrator created display models, the current one is used. If your administrator did not create display models, default styles are used. The default display model draws all the geometry in the industry model and applies a default style to each layer. You cannot modify the default display model. A display model and autoloaded layers help orient you to the map before generating. Use the Generate Graphics command to populate your map with the feature geometry in the enterprise industry model .
Display models with many layers take some time to display.
Each feature class can be associated with one or more layers that have associated styles. Use the Display Manager to define styles for layers. Layer styles are saved as display model files.
You can administer separate display models for each extension that can be referenced by your module specific display models. For example, reference feature layers for the COGO extensions.
Use styles to display the same features in different ways depending on your needs. All feature classes, for example pipes, houses, and parcels can be visualized in many ways as needed by your job function. For example:
When you switch to another display model, you can easily view the area of interest from the previous display model. If you change the viewport , the new viewport is applied the next time you generate graphics. For example, you might have two display models, DM1 and DM2. You can generate graphics with DM1 and zoom into an area of interest. If you then select DM2 and generate graphics again, the same area of interest is generated using DM2. To view a different area of interest, define a new one using a viewport or Feature Search .
Unit settings are specified in Infrastructure Administrator when the industry model is created. These are stored in the database. In your drawing, you can set units for the display of your geometry. These units affect only the display within the drawing, and are not stored in the database.
