Create a new object from the target shape (rebuild target)

When you create empty target shapes with the Add Target button in the Shape Editor, no separate geometry is created for the shape, which keeps the scene uncluttered. If you decide later that you want the target shape to have its own object (actual geometry), you can do this.

The new target object is connected to the its blend shape deformer with a target shape so you can edit it and affect the blend shape on the base object, like any other target shape.

Note: You can also create target objects for in-between target shapes that have no corresponding geometry - see Add in-between target shapes.

Watch this video or follow the steps below to create geometry for target shapes that have none.

Note: This video illustrates how to create geometry for target shapes in Maya, but you can do the same in Maya LT.

To create a new object for a target shape or in-between target shape

  1. In the Shape Editor, select a blend shape deformer.
  2. Select the target shape or in-between target shape for which you want an object and do one of the following:
    • Click the Rebuild Blend Shape Target icon .
    • Right-click the target or in-between target shape's name and choose Rebuild Target.
    • Choose Shapes > Rebuild Target.
Note: If the target shape geometry already exists in the scene (there is a Shape node with this name), this option is disabled.

A new target object based on and named after the selected target shape is created. You can move it away from the base object to see it, then modify its geometry to change the target shape (see Edit target shapes).
