Coolant inlet for Channel (3D)

Applies to 2017.3 Update and later

The Coolant inlet for Channel (3D) dialog is used to specify the conditions for the coolant inlet for the 3D conformal cooling channel.

To access this dialog, make sure that your cooling channel has a 3D mesh, and that you have selected a Cool (FEM) in your analysis sequence.

Click (Boundary Conditions tab > Cooling panel > Channel (3D) Inlets), then click New or Edit.

Note: The Coolant channel inlet for 3D requires that an inlet and an outlet node get placed on the CAD body. In order to use Coolant 3D inlets, the channel needs to be specified in CAD. This is because a special CFD mesher is used to mesh the cooling channel. This mesher uses the inlet and outlet information to create the enhancement layers along the surface.

Widget Explanation
Coolant

Select the coolant to control the temperature inside the mold for the analysis.

Note: If there is not one associated with the study, click Select and choose an existing coolant. If you want to change the selected coolant, click Edit and make the required changes.
Channel (3D) control

The rate at which coolant is pumped through the conformal cooling channels can be specified in various ways. Select the one which resembles your system most accurately:

Velocity
Specify the velocity at which the coolant flows into the conformal cooling channel.

The following options are available:

Normal velocity
If this option is selected then the solver calculates the unit normal vector component of the face where the inlet is specified and use the reverse of that unit vector for calculating the x, y, and z velocity components.
Velocity components
Use this option to specify the x, y, and z components of the velocity vector of the coolant entering the cooling channel yourself. If you select this option, click Set to specify these components in the Velocity components dialog.
Specified pressure
Specify the total pressure drop across the cooling channel.
Specified flow rate
Specify a constant volumetric flow rate for an individual circuit.
Mass flow rate
Specify a constant mass flow rate for an individual circuit.
Coolant inlet temperature

Specify the temperature of the coolant as it enters the system.

The coolant inlet temperature determines how quickly the mold cools down to the ejection temperature.
