Example 4: Adaptive Moving Refinement within Layer

All required input files listed in this example can be retrieved by executing the following command:

$ pan -t 04

After the above command is executed, a directory named 04 is created, containing all files.

Problem description

This is an example of adaptive refinement and coarsening within a layer. This type of analysis is only applicable to heating a solid surface with no element activation. Only thermal analysis can be performed with this option. No element activation can currently be performed with this option.

A moving heat source of 153 W is applied on the top surface of a 3.2 mm x 3.2 mm x 12.7 mm substrate made of Inconel 718. A surface convection of 10.d-6 W/((mm2) – degC) is applied on the top surface and the all other faces are insulated. The *ADPM card is used to control the acceptable temperature gradients across an element for coarsening. Increasing this number can result in artificial energy being added into the system. The mesh and laser path are automatically generated using Local Simulation.
