We can calculate the total heat flow from the chip to the board.
Under the Parts heading in the browser, right-click 1 < Board:1 > and deactivate the Visibility option to hide the circuit board.
Click Results Contours Heat Flow Heat Rate Through Face.
Click Results Contours Settings Smooth Results to deactivate this option. Smoothing must be turned off to inquire about face- or element-based results.
Click View Navigate Orientation Bottom View. The model displays as shown in the following image:
With the Selection Shape Point or Rectangle and Selection Select Surfaces commands active, click on the bottom of the chip.
Click Results Inquire Inquire Current Results.
Select the Sum option in the Summary drop-down list. The total heat flow rate out of the bottom of the chip is approximately 2.8 Watts. The remainder of the 5W of internal heat generation is dissipated to the ambient air due to the convection load on the remaining chip surfaces. Conduction to the board accounts for over half of the total heat dissipation of the chip.
Right-click in the display area anc choose Show All to restore the visibility of the circuit board (Part 1).
