Feed rate reduction

Use the Feed rate reduction page to reduce the feed rate of tool moves over specific distances. The options on this page are different if you are using a drilling strategy or a turning strategy.

Drilling strategies

Use the options on this page to reduce the feed rate towards the top, bottom, or intersection of a hole. This enables the tool to slow down at the bottom of a hole, or move on slowly, and then speed up (or even "slow, quick, slow" for the situation where there are two holes, one above the other with air in between). If the machine tool has a drilling cycle which supports this option, set it up in the option file (otherwise, on the NC Program dialog select a Drilling Cycle Output of off).

Note: Feed rate reduction is applied to the start of Single peck, Ream, and Counter bore cycle types.

This page contains the following:

Use absolute start/end distances — Select to enter the Hole start > Safety margin and Hole end > Safety margin and Hole end > Distance as an absolute distance rather than a factor. When deselected a value of 0.2 reduces the feed rate and spindle speed for 20% of the hole length. When selected a value of 0.2 reduces the feed rate and spindle speed for 0.2 mm. Factors must have a value between 0 and 1.

Hole start — Specifies how to reduce the feed rate and spindle speed at the top of a hole.

Hole intersection — Select to enable feed rate and spindle speed reductions at hole intersections. This slows down the feed rate and spindle speed just above a hole intersection and then speeds it up again after the hole intersection. To reduce feed rates and spindle speeds at hole intersections you must locate these intersections by selecting Find hole intersections on the Hole Feature Sets context menu.

Hole end — Specifies how to reduce the feed rate and spindle speed at the bottom of a hole.

Step control — Specifies how to incrementally reduce the feed rate over the specified Distance. The feed rate decreases in discrete increments and not continuously.

Turning strategies

Use the options on this page page to reduce the feed rate for tool moves that are smaller than a specified threshold value. Feed rate reduction helps PowerMill to properly machine small turning features. It is typically applied to small chamfers or radii. This page contains the following:

Feed reduction for small moves — Select to reduce the feed rate for tool moves smaller than the specified Threshold value.

Threshold — Enter a value to define the distance of a small move. The feed rate is reduced for any tool moves smaller than this value.

(%) — Enter the feed rate as a percentage of the maximum feed rate for tool moves smaller than the threshold.
