To convert a Dual Domain mesh into a Midplane mesh

Applies to 2018.3 Update and later

To control which surface is retained when converting a Dual Domain mesh into a Midplane mesh, manually select and delete one side of the Dual Domain mesh.

It is assumed that the model has been imported and meshed as Dual Domain.

  1. Click (Mesh tab > Mesh panel > Dual Domain) and select Midplane.
  2. Select the part mesh.
  3. Click (Mesh tab > Properties panel > Change).
  4. Select Part Surface (Midplane) from the Change Property Type To dialog and click OK.
Note: The mesh property must be changed before surfaces are deleted for the part thickness to be transferred to the remaining surface.
  5. Delete the surface not required using a combination of selection tools found at Mesh tab > Selection panel.
  6. Click (Mesh tab > Mesh Edit panel > Purge Nodes) to remove all nodes that are not connected to elements.
  7. The thickness property of a Midplane element is the same as the thickness of the Dual Domain model at that point.
Note: This method may create gaps in the mesh that will need to be repaired manually.
The resulting Midplane mesh is not located in the same position as a true Midplane mesh, but offset by half the thickness of the part. Optionally, move the surface back to the middle of the wall by:
    • Moving all the nodes on a flat surface (Mesh tab > Mesh Edit > Move Nodes)
    • Offset nodes on a curved surface (Mesh tab > Mesh Edit panel > Advanced > Offset)
  8. Check the connectivity of any moved surfaces and repair as required.
