About the Directed-Energy Deposition Workflow

Introducing simulation for DED manufacturing methods, a new slice export format, LSR, is now available. It can be generated through the Slices section as well as a machine workspace, making it available in your preferred workflow.

The generated LSR toolpath file can then be loaded into Autodesk® Simulation Utility for Netfabb® where the simulation is set up observing DED process parameters.

To Create an LSR File

  1. Using the Slices section, slice your part and set up your toolpaths as usual.
  2. Select the prepared slice stacks and choose Slices > Export > as LSR.
  3. Make the necessary adjustments, and save the slice file to disk.

Alternatively,

  1. Choose Prepare > Load Machine Workspace.
  2. From the appearing list, select Generic Moving Source Workspace and click OK.
  3. Drag or load your part into the new workspace and make the required adjustments to configuration, adjust part placement, and apply support as needed.
  4. Click Export build data and save the LSR file to disk.

Load an LSR File into Simulation

Note: This feature is available only in Autodesk® Simulation Utility for Netfabb®, bundled with Autodesk® Netfabb® Local Simulation. It cannot be used with Autodesk® Simulation Utility LT for Netfabb®, bundled with Autodesk® Netfabb®.
  1. From Netfabb's menu, choose System > Simulation Utility.
  2. From the splash screen of the opening Autodesk® Simulation Utility for Netfabb®, click the Directed Energy Deposition button, then click Create Simulation.
  3. Through the appearing file dialog, load the LSR file saved earlier.
  4. Make adjustment to the import settings and wait for the file to load and render.

You can now adjust settings to match your DED process and simulate your part arrangement.
