Video: Add Dimensions

In part 11 of the tutorial, you use dimensions to indicate the location of a feature wall, and to display building width and length.

This video demonstrates the following:

  1. Add aligned and angular dimensions to indicate the location of the feature wall relative to the building.
  2. Dimension the width and length of the building.
  3. Use the Openings option with an aligned dimension to automatically include window openings when dimensioning the exterior wall.
Note: This video was recorded using Revit LT 2018. When performing the procedures, you may notice minor differences in functionality and user interface.

Dimensions are annotation elements that are view-specific. That is, they are only visible in this one view, as opposed to model elements which are visible in all views.

On the Annotate tab, select the Aligned dimension tool. On the Options Bar, the placement settings specify which part of the walls you will dimension from and to - in this case, wall faces. When the cursor is moved over a wall face, it is highlighted, and you click to select it. When another parallel wall face is selected, the dimension string displays.

Then, the third click places the dimension string. The lock icon that displays near the dimension string can be clicked to establish a constraint between the dimensioned objects. Next, the position of the feature wall needs to be established, but it is not parallel to any other walls in the project.

Aligned dimensions can be used to dimension to a point. First, select the left wall of the project, and then move the cursor close to the corner of the feature wall. Press Tab until a point indicator displays, and then click once to select the point, and once again to place the dimension. Use a similar technique to dimension the point from the top wall.

The Angular dimension tool can be used to establish the angle of the feature wall. Next, using the Entire Walls setting for the Pick option on the Options Bar, additional elements can be dimensioned just by clicking on the wall once. In this example, the center points of the openings in the wall will be added as dimension points.

Now, click the wall and the opening center points are included in the dimension string. To place an overall dimension, the Pick option is changed to Individual Reference. When a second string of dimensions is added, it will snap into position near the existing dimension string. This snap distance can be changed in the dimension type settings.
