Save, import, export, and reset preferences

Save your preferences (including hotkeys, shelves, marking menus, and so on) in a file, or load some or all of the preferences from a saved file.

Save Preferences

Set up your menus, shelves, hotkeys, etc, the way you want them.
Choose Preferences > User Preferences > Save Preferences.

If you make changes to shelves and options and do not save, you are prompted to save them when you exit Alias.

Choose Preferences > User Preferences > Export Preference Set.

The file browser opens.
Type in a name for your Preference Set.
Click Save.

Your settings are saved in the specified file.

Preference sets appear on the Preferences menu to the right of the prompt line.

Choose Preferences > User Preferences > Import Preference Set .
In the option box, ensure that the components you wish to load have check marks.
Click Go.

The file browser opens.
Select the Preference Set that you want to load.
Click Open.

Your preferences are set. You do not have to restart Alias for them to take effect.

Set up your preferences so that multiple users can access the same shelf sets and workspaces from a shared location.

Choose Preferences > General Preferences > System.
In the Shared Preference Location box, enter the location of the shared preferences.

Alias creates a Preference_Sets, shelves, and workspaces subfolder in the specified folder. The folder hierarchy mimics that of the UserPrefs2020 folder. The shelves and workspaces subfolder are required as a minimum. The shelves subfolder must have the provided subfolders, such as Default_Shelves.
Copy the preference files you want to share from the default location under UserPrefs2020, maintaining the same folder structure.

The shared preferences appear on the Preferences menu to the right of the prompt line.

Choose Preferences > General Preferences > System.
In the Shared Preference Location box, enter the location of the shared preferences.

Select the preferences

Reset your preferences to the ones in place when you launched the current session of Alias or to the factory defaults.

Choose Utilities > Tool Resets.
For a given element on the left-hand side of the window, do one of the following:
- Check the Reset box next to a shelf item to reset the options of shelf tools to the values they had when Alias started (beginning of current session).
- Check the Factory Reset box to reset all options to the original Alias default values.
Click the Apply Resets button at the bottom of the window.
