The Basic area calculation standard supplied with AutoCAD Architecture 2022 toolset provides a rule for the general practice of measuring gross and net area as accepted by most building inspectors and zoning officials in the US.
Space Boundary Type | Classification | boundary Objects | Wall Type | Boundary |
---|---|---|---|---|
Net | N/A | Door | Wall with adjacent spaces | Measured to centerline of door panel |
Net | N/A | Opening | Wall with adjacent spaces | Measured to centerline of opening frame |
Net | N/A | Walls | Wall | Measured to adjacent face |
Gross | N/A | Walls | Wall without adjacent spaces | Measured to opposite face |
Gross | N/A | Walls | Wall with adjacent spaces | Measured to centerline of wall |
You can use AutoCAD objects like closed polylines or rectangles to generate a space that is deducted from an associative space. You could do this for example to represent construction spaces or otherwise unavailable areas. Since AutoCAD objects cannot be classified to control their behavior, the following standard behavior is applied to enclosed deducted spaces formed by AutoCAD objects in the Basic standard:
