To Manage Libraries Stored on SQL Express Server

When you store libraries on a server with Microsoft SQL Express, the limit for size of each library is 4 GB. Operations that cause exceeding the library limit cannot be completed. Split large libraries to keep acceptable library size.

Tip: To avoid problems with the library size limit, upgrade the server to a full version of Microsoft SQL.

Split a large user library

Move a portion of content to a new library to reduce the library size.

  1. Create a user library.
  2. In the project, add the new library to the Content Center Configuration.
Note: You must be logged in to the library server to complete this step.
  3. Move a portion of content to the new library:
    • On the ribbon, click Manage tab Content Center panel Editor to open the Content Center Editor dialog box.
    • From the Library View list, select the large library.
    • Locate and select the content to move.
Note: A set of families or categories can be moved in one process.
    • Right-click the selected content, click Move To, and then click the new library to select it as a destination.

Selected content is removed from the original library and added to the new user library.

  4. Use the Update Tool to update transferred content.

Migrate large user libraries stored on SQL Express server

When you migrate a user library by using the Update Tool, the size of the library can grow. As a result, the library can exceed the SQL Express limit. When a library exceeds the limit, the Update Tool stops the migration of this library. The Failures tab on the final Update Tool page lists the problem. The status of the partly migrated library is unknown and we do not recommend you to use this library.

To resolve the library size problem:

  1. Replace the current user library with the original, nonmigrated version of the library.
Tip: If you have no backup version of your library, you can try using the partly migrated library. But remember that the library can include corrupted data.
  2. Use the Transfer Guide to transfer the legacy library from the server to the Desktop Content folder.
  3. Set the Application Options to use Desktop Content:
    • Click File Options to open the Application Options dialog box.
    • On the Content Center tab, select Inventor Desktop Content.
    • Click OK to close the Application Options dialog box.
  4. Use the Update Tool to migrate the transferred library.
  5. Split the migrated library into two libraries: Create a Desktop Content user library and move a portion of content to this library.
  6. Use the Library Transfer Guide to transfer both libraries to the server.
  7. Set the Application Options to use the server as the library storage. On the Content Center tab of the Application Options dialog box, select Autodesk Vault Server.
  8. Verify the configuration of Content Center libraries on the server and in the project. If appropriate, add the new user library to the configuration.
