Work with symbols in drawings

Edit a symbol leader

  1. In the graphics window, select one or more symbols of the same type, right-click, and then select:
    • Edit Arrowhead to open the Change Arrowhead dialog box. Click the arrow to select a new style and then click the green check mark.
    • Add Leader/Vertex. To add a leader, click a point to specify the leader start point and then click the leader line to attach the new leader to. To add a vertex, click a point on the existing leader and then drag the new vertex point to the desired position.
    • Delete Leader. Use caution. a symbol whose leader has been deleted loses its association with the model.
    • Note: The context menu differs for particular symbol types.
  2. In the graphics window, select a symbol to display its grip points. Then move the grip points to the desired position.
    • To attach a symbol to a model edge, drag the base grip point to the desired edge.
    • Drag a symbol attachment point along a model edge to create an extension line. Drag a symbol without a leader away from the edge to create a leader. (Applies for most types of symbols.)

Create symbols with single-segment leaders

When you place symbols or balloons in the drawing, multiple leader segments are created until you right-click and click Continue. Select the Single Segment Leader option to create drawing annotations with a single leader segment. The Single-Segment Leader option is available for balloons, leader text, surface texture symbols, welding symbols, feature control frames, datum targets, and sketch symbols.

  1. Start the symbol placement command (for example the Surface Texture Symbol command).
  2. Right-click in the graphic window, and select Single-Segment Leader.

The setting is saved in the computer registry and is retained until you change it. You set the option separately for each type of symbols.

In this example, the Surface Texture Symbols are set to be created with single-segment leaders.

Align annotations

  1. In the graphics window, select symbols to align.
  2. Right-click, and click Align Vertical, Horizontal, or To Edge.
  3. (To Edge option only) On the drawing sheet, select a model edge or line.
Tip: To keep the offset distance between annotations, hold the CTRL key when placing the aligned annotations.
  4. Move the symbols to the desired position, and click to place the symbols.

Horizontally aligned annotations are aligned along the Y axis, and the X-axis position does not change. Vertically aligned annotations are aligned along the X axis, and the Y-axis position does not change. Annotations aligned to an edge are moved in direction perpendicular to the edge.

To avoid overlapping and to keep a specific offset distance between annotations, hold the CTRL key when placing the aligned annotations. To set the distance between annotations, in the current balloon style, edit the Default Offset value. If you set the Default Offset value to zero, there is no offset, and the annotations are aligned tangent to one another.

Change a symbol style

Select a symbol, and then on the Annotate tab, Format panel, click the arrow on the Style list and select a style to apply to the symbol. To change appearance of all symbols using a style, edit the style settings in Style and Standard Editor.
