Change the name of one or more objects

You can give different objects in the scene the same name, but two sibling nodes (nodes with the same parent) cannot have the same name.

Note:

In node and attribute names, all punctuation except for the underscore (_) and the pound sign (#) are illegal characters.

To change the name of an object or node

  1. Do one of the following:
    • Select an object or node and edit its name at the top of the Attribute Editor.
    • Double-click a node in the Outliner.
    • Right-click a node in the Hypergraph and select Rename.

To rename multiple objects at once

  1. Select the objects.
  2. Open the pop-up menu next to the input field(s) on the Status line and select Rename.
  3. Type the base name for all the objects. Maya renames the objects to have the base name plus an incremental number.
  4. Tip: When typing values into the Rename field:
    • Press the Enter key on the numeric keypad to enter the value and keep the focus in the field.
    • Press the Enter or Return key on the keyboard to enter the value and return the focus to the view windows.

To add a prefix to the names of a parent node and all its children

  1. Select the parent node and select Modify > Prefix Hierarchy Names.

To search and replace names in the scene

  1. Select Modify > Search and Replace Names.

You can search and replace all node names in the scene, selected node names, or node names in a hierarchy.
