About preparing builds

Typical approaches to build preparation using Netfabb's workspaces

The workflow of either of the types of workspaces is generally rather similar. They differ mostly in taking advantage of their features to improve the build before actually executing it.

Metal workspaces – SLM, SLS, DED

The greatest advantage of the metal workspaces is the interconnectivity with Autodesk® Simulation Utility for Netfabb®. Before the project is actually manufactured, a large number of decisions can be made from the information gained from simulating the build process. Simulation can outright replace the original part, for instance, when thermal and mechanical effects must be compensated for by manufacturing an intentionally deformed part that reaches the desired shape only after cooling.

Resin workspaces, extrusion workspaces – SLA, FFF

Additional, custom, and manufacturer-specific machines

Some machines may expose more or fewer, or different controls and options than outlined above. In most cases, the underlying commands are the same, they are just presented differently.
