Video: Create a Stair by Sketching

Use sketching tools to define stair boundaries and risers to create a custom shaped stair.

This video demonstrates the following:

  1. Sketch the Boundary of the stair.
  2. Sketch the risers of the stair.
  3. Convert a component stair to a sketch.
  4. Edit a stair sketch.
Note: This video was recorded using Revit 2021. When using a newer software release, you may notice differences in functionality and user interface.

Component stairs make it easy to create and modify straight stair runs, but custom shapes require a custom solution. Custom stairs are created using sketching tools which allow more flexibility when creating stairs. In this example, the stairs have an open flared end and is created with the sketching tools.

To create a stair, by sketching begin in a plan view. On the Architecture tab, click Stair. In the draw panel, select create sketch. In the stair sketching mode, you draw boundaries of the stair , and the risers of the stairs. Think of the boundaries as the stringers to the stairs, and the riser is the edge of each step. An underlay of linework shows the stair we are going to create.

Start with the boundary, and use line segments to sketch each boundary. Here we are We'll sketch 2 line segments and then use a filet segment at the corner. Boundaries are established for both edges of the stair where the stringers are.

Once the boundaries are established, create the risers. Click Riser on the contextual tab and select the drawing tool. At the bottom of this stair, arc segments and straight segments are used. Endpoints of the lines used for the risers must touch the boundary lines. Each riser created changes the count of risers needed to create the stair.

Once the boundaries and risers are created, click the check mark to finish the stair sketch. Click the checkmark again to complete the stair.

To make changes, select the stair and click Edit Stairs, then select the run and click Edit Sketch. Once in the sketch mode, make the required changes.

Stairs made from components can be converted to sketch based elements to make custom stairs.

Use sketching techniques to create custom stair elements for your models.
