About View Types

Use view types to quickly apply graphics properties and view templates to new views.

A view type defines some graphics properties, such as a reference label and tags for elevations, callouts, or sections. It can also specify a view template to apply to a new view, and whether template updates should be applied to existing views.

Revit provides standard view types for 2D views and 3D views, such as floor plans, elevations, and sections. If desired, you can duplicate a view type and customize it to use certain settings or a particular view template. Custom view types allow you to apply consistent settings to new views quickly and easily.

You can create view types for:

• Plan views: floor plans, reflected ceiling plans, structural plans
• Elevation views
• Section views
• 3D views
• Schedules
• Legends
• Drafting views

You cannot create view types for:

• Area plans
• Sheets

The process of using view types is as follows:

1. Create view templates that reflect the view types you need.
2. Create the desired view types, specifying their properties and view templates.
3. When you create a new view, specify the view type to apply.

  Note: When you change a view's type, the related graphics properties are applied to the view. However, the view template specified for the view type is not applied to the view.
