Learn about the structural steel framing and column shapes and families that you can use in the steel fabrication workflow.
Only structural steel columns and framings are supported in the steel fabrication workflow. The structural steel columns and framing elements need to meet a series of requirements in order to be used in the steel fabrication workflow:
- Non-linear elements are not supported and you are notified by a warning message upon including these types of elements in the fabrication workflow.
- Tapered, compound, welded, cellular and joist elements are not supported and you are notified by a warning message upon including these types of elements in the fabrication workflow.
- Only elements created in families by simple extrusion or sweep are supported. Elements with additional components or openings, defined in the family along elements are not supported.
- The Material for Model Behavior parameter in the
Family and Category dialog must be set to Steel.
- The Section Shape parameter in the
Family and Category dialog must be set to a supported shape.
- Supported shapes:

- The shape defined in medium detail level should only contain straight segments and no roundings - roundings should be defined only in fine detail level.
- The shapes of connected elements for medium and fine detail levels must be consistent. Straight segments defined in medium detail level should overlap segments defined in fine detail level. If the shape for the medium detail level is not the same as for the fine detail level, the steel fabrication shape will not be created and you will be notified by a warning message.
- Only sections defined by one closed loop are supported. Compound and welded sections are not supported.
- The outer radius of cold-formed sections should be equal with the sum of the inner radius and plate thickness.
