Dimension lines for a family are created in a view if you define references inside the family. The references defined in the family will be used to create the dimension lines.
To generate dimensions on a shop drawing at a desired location for a family, you need to add some extra information.
If the family does not have the lines for dimensioning defined, but contains a solid with references at its extents, the extents are dimensioned in all views.
If the family does not have either lines or a solid, but it creates a void into the hosting element, that specific family will be dimensioned together with the contour of the main element.
