Error: Element Has Become Corrupt

Error: Element <element ID> has become corrupt at some time before this session.

You may encounter this error when opening a Revit file. Record the element ID reported by the error message for future reference.

Solution

To correct the problem, open the project file using the Audit option, as follows:

  1. Click File tab Open (Project).
  2. In the Open dialog, navigate to and select the project file, select the Audit option, and click Open.

    The Audit option scans, detects, and fixes corrupt elements in the project. When using this option, it may take some time to open the file.

  3. Save the new audited version of the project file.

If you continue to have problems, determine which element is causing the problem, as follows:

  1. Open a backup copy of the project that does not cause the error message.
  2. Click Manage tabInquiry panel (Select by ID).
  3. In the Select Elements by ID dialog, enter the ID number of the corrupted element (provided by the original error message), and click Show.

In previous releases, a third-party tool sometimes contributed to the corruption of the Project Information element.

If the Select by ID tool indicates that the corrupt element is Project Information, do the following:

  1. Open the audited version of the project file.
  2. Open another copy of the project (such as a backup copy) that does not display the corrupt element error message.

    If the element corruption occurs in a workshared model, you can open a local copy of the model that does not display the error message.

    Make sure that these are the only 2 files open in Revit.

  3. In the audited project file, do the following:
    1. Click Manage tabSettings panel (Transfer Project Standards).
    2. Click Check None.
    3. Select Project Info.
    4. Click OK.
    5. If the Duplicate Types dialog displays, click Overwrite.
  4. Close the backup copy of the project.
  5. Save the audited project file with the updated Project Information.
