Important:Revit models are not backwards-compatible. When you create or modify a model using the current release of the software, you cannot open the model later using a previous release.
To open a
Revit file, use any of the following methods:
Press
CTRL+O.
On the Home page, under Models or Families, click Open, or click a thumbnail image in the Recent Files list.
Click File tab (Open).
Click File tab (Open), and select a file type.
Click File tab, and select a file from the Recent Documents list.
About Linked Models that Require an Upgrade
If you open a model that contains one or more Revit LT links, a message displays if a linked model needs to be upgraded to the current software release.
Open a Revit Model
Navigate to the folder to select the model you want to open.

Use the Autodesk Docs connected drive in Windows Explorer when you want to open the latest published version of a Revit LT workshared cloud model.
Open a Revit Family
Open a family in the Family Editor to modify the family or to use it as the starting point for a new family.
Audit a Model
Use the Audit function periodically to maintain the health of a Revit model, when preparing to upgrade the software, or as needed to locate and correct issues.
About Revit Viewer
To open and review models without an active license, you can run Revit LT in viewer mode. Revit LT Viewer is intended for reviewing models and printing views and sheets without the need for a software license or subscription.
