The Scene Graph File menu contains these features:
Imports geometry into the scene. When adding a VRED scene, the Import Options dialog appears. Decide whether variants, touch sensors, sequences, or environments should be merged and more.
Saves the currently selected nodes to a new VRED scene. To save to non-VRED file types, in the Menu Bar, select File > Export.
Contains the following options:
This option is disabled if a smart reference is not selected or is already loaded.
Loads the selected smart reference VPB file into VRED, displaying it in the viewport. Use this for memory/performance management during a session.
Multi-selection is supported for this option, but undo is not.
This option is disabled if the selected smart reference has already been unloaded or the selected node is not a smart reference.
For smart references, it closes the selected loaded smart reference file from your scene, removing it from the viewport. Its status is removed from the Reference Editor and Scene Graph. Use this to unload unneeded content from memory to improve performance during a session.
For source references, it purges the selected loaded source reference file from your VRED scene, removing it from the viewport. Its status is removed from the Reference Editor and Scene Graph.
Multi-selection is supported for this option, but undo is not.
Select one of the following editing options:
Rename - (Ctrl+R) Changes the name of the selected reference to whatever is entered in the name field.
Clone - (Ctrl+D) Creates a instance of the selected reference in the Scene Graph.

Delete - (Del) Deletes the selected reference from the Reference Editor and Scene Graph.
Updates the storage location path of the same reference file for both the smart and source to use another user-defined storage location. If the file cannot be found, the Repath dialog appears for locating the file.
Multi-selection is supported for this option, but undo is not.
This option is disabled if a reference is not selected or if the smart reference is already unloaded.
Combines the content of the selected reference into the current VPB, removing all reference attributes. The node no longer appears in the Reference Editor or Scene Graph.
Multi-selection is supported for this option.
This option is ONLY available for references with a source reference file.
Does one of the following:
When a source reference is selected, it converts the it to a smart reference. This creates a smart reference in the session, but it is not yet saved to disk, until you Exports Smart Changes. Source reference is created in Session and not yet saved to disk until user Exports Smart Changes.
When a smart reference is selected, it takes the currently selected VRED node, opens an export dialog for saving the contents of node to a separate file (VPB), as a reference.
Multi-selection is supported for this option.
This option is disabled if a smart reference is not selected or is already unloaded.
Highlights the selected nodes in Scene Graph and viewport.
This action cannot be undone.
This option is disabled if a smart reference is already unloaded.
Creates a smart reference empty node, named SmartReference, below the selected node. If no selection is made, the new node is added to the end of the list.
This option is disabled if a smart reference is not selected.
Reimports the selected smart reference file. Use this to update an out of date smart reference. When the Import dialog appears, locate the source file and click Open.
Multi-selection is supported for this option, but undo is not.
Replaces the current file with a newly selected file.
When a smart reference is selected, select a file, then the new file is imported. The reference VRED node is renamed to that of the new file.
When a smart-source reference is selected, select a file, then the selected smart file is reimported and the smart is replaced with a newly converted version with the same name as the source. In your scene, the smart reference will display an asterisk, indicating it has been modified, but has yet to be saved to disk.
Replace Smart Reference affects the immediate parent reference, if the previous and new files don't match, so the parent reference will also be modified, as a result of this action.
This action cannot be undone.
This option is disabled if a smart reference is not selected, is already unloaded, or has been modified.
Updates the storage location path of the smart reference file to use another user-defined storage location.
When a single childless reference is selected, select a new directory.
When references with children are selected or multi-selections are made, the Repath dialog appears for locating the file(s).
Multi-selection is supported for this option, but undo is not.
This option is disabled if a smart-source reference is not selected or if the smart reference is already unloaded.
Removes the smart reference from the reference.
Multi-selection is supported for this option.
This option is disabled if a smart reference is not selected or has been modified.
Opens an Explorer window at the smart reference file location.
This option is disabled if a smart reference is not selected, is currently modified, or already unloaded.
Saves selected smart reference changes made in the VRED session.
Multi-selection is supported for this option, but undo is not.
This option is disabled if a smart reference is not selected, has not been modified, is already unloaded, or is an empty smart reference.
Saves selected smart reference changes made in the VRED session as a new file. This new file appears in the session and the old file is removed.
This action cannot be undone.
This option is disabled if a smart references is already unloaded.
Creates a source reference node below the selected node. Select a file and click Open.
This option is disabled if a source or smart-source reference is not selected.
Does one of the following:
When a source reference is selected, it reimports the selected source reference file, updating the out of date source file. The status of the source file will change from out of date to Up to date.
When a smart-source reference is selected, it reimports the selected source file and replaces the smart with a newly converted version. The status changes from out of date to Up to date.
When the Import dialog appears, locate the source file and click Import.

Provides a submenu for editing the usage of external file references. These files are imported into the Scene Graph and are present within its structure.
Makes it possible to change the selected object. The object's icon changes to Modified Assets (modified asset).
