Reording Rows in a BOM

The order of items in the Bill of Materials is inherited from the CAD application that generated the BOM. This order can be modified.

When viewing the BOM in Vault Professional, the Row Order column indicates the order of the items. Each subassembly listed in the BOM displays its own numbering scheme, starting at 1. The parent rows increment by one and the children rows increment by tenths. For example, if a parent row is 4, then the first child starts with 4.1.

New items added to the BOM within Vault Professional are appended to the end of the order. New items added to the BOM from a CAD add-in are appended to the end of the order when an update is performed.

When an item is removed from the BOM, a gap occurs in the numbering sequence. To update the order, drag-and-drop rows to reset the numbers. Only the top-level children in an item's BOM can be renumbered.

Items listed in the BOM can be reordered by dragging and dropping items within the BOM. The items can be returned to the last saved order by clicking Restore to Saved Order on the toolbar.

Reorder a BOM

  1. In the item master, double-click an item.
  2. In the item record, click Edit and select the Bill of Materials tab.
  3. Click on the Row Order column to sort by the current order.
Note: The BOM must be sorted by the Row Order column to reorder rows.
  4. Select a row and drag and drop it to the new location.
Note: Rows can be dragged and dropped within the current parent. They cannot be dragged outside of the parent.
  5. To revert back to the last saved order, click Restore Saved Order on the toolbar.
  6. To manually modify a row value, click within the Row Order cell and change the value.
Note: When editing the row values, only the child's value is shown and not the parent's. So if you edit a child file that is 4.2 in the row order, only the 2 shows.
  7. Click Save to save the changed order or click File > Exit to close the item record without saving the new BOM order.
