Set the DWF or DWFx File Resolution

You can specify the pixel resolution for vector and raster graphics of the DWF and DWFx files that you create. The higher the resolution, the greater the precision but the larger the file size.

Danger: Raster and gradient resolution settings can never exceed the vector setting.

The following list shows the default values for vector and raster resolutions:

When you create DWF or DWFx files intended for plotting, select a resolution to match the output of your plotter or printer. High resolutions (over 2400 dpi) are for viewing. For example, when you create DWF or DWFx files of drawings that contain a lot of detail, such as a topographical map of a large region, use a higher resolution setting for greater detail in the DWF or DWFx file. Use extreme resolutions (over 40,000 dpi) only when necessary; they may produce very large files. As you increase the resolution setting, raster image quality increases, the speed of printing decreases, and memory requirements increase.

As an example of the difference between DWF or DWFx resolution settings, consider a map of the world that you want to output as a DWF or DWFx file for viewing. With a medium resolution setting, you might be able to zoom to a level of detail approximately the size of the state of California on the world map. With a higher resolution setting, you might be able to zoom to a level of detail the size of a city. With an extreme resolution setting, you might be able to zoom to a level of detail the size of a building.

Procedures

To specify the DWF or DWFx file resolution

  1. Click Home tab Output panel Plot.
  2. In the Printer/Plotter area, in the Name list, select a DWF or DWFx plotting device. Click Properties.
  3. In the Plotter Configuration Editor, Device and Document Settings tab, select Custom Properties from the tree window.
  4. In the Access Custom Dialog area, click Custom Properties.
Note: You can enter any whole number between 150 and 100,000,000 for color and grayscale resolution settings as long as the number does not exceed the current vector resolution setting.
  5. In the Properties dialog box, in the Vector and Gradient Resolution (Dots Per Inch) area, select Vector and Gradient Resolution settings from the list, or select Custom and enter custom settings. Click OK.
  6. In the Properties dialog box, in the Raster Image Resolution (Dots Per Inch) area, select Color and Grayscale Resolution settings or Black and White Resolution settings from the list, or enter Custom settings. Click OK.
  7. In the Plotter Configuration Editor, click OK.
  8. In the Changes to a Printer Configuration dialog box, do one of the following. Then click OK.
    • Select Apply Changes for the Current Plot Only to specify a one-time override of the configuration settings that isn't saved to the configuration file.
    • Select Save Changes to the Following File to save the configuration changes to the configuration file.
  9. In the Browse for Plot File dialog box, in the Save In location list, select a plotting location for the DWF or DWFx file, and click Save. Click OK.
