Borrowing a license removes a license from the license server to use on an offline machine.
When you have borrowed a license, the borrowed license will automatically be used on start up. You can suspend this process temporarily at any time without returning the license to the server. The license will automatically be returned to the server on the date you specified when you initially borrowed the license. You can also choose to return the license manually at an earlier time.
You can borrow a license from the Manage License option under the user account menu. For more information on borrowing from Manage License, see To view and manage a network license.
In general, you should always borrow a license through the user account menu. However, if the option to manage licenses is not available from the user account menu, or if the option to borrow a license is not available, you can use command line tools to borrow a license and manage a borrowed license.
On Windows, the LMTOOLS utility is used to manage borrowed licenses.
On Linux and macOS, lmutil is used to manage borrowed licenses.
To borrow a license on Windows, open the LMTOOLS utility and enter adskflex for the Vendor Name. Enter the return date, return time, and then click on Set Borrow Expiration.
To borrow a license on macOS or Linux, open a terminal and change directory to where lmutil is installed and execute the following command:
lmutil lmborrow adskflex end_date [time]
where end_date is the date the license will be returned in dd-mm-yyyy format. The return time is optional. If used, it must be specified in 24hr format, hh:mm. For example: lmutil lmborrow adskflex 14-oct-2020 [14:00] borrows a license until October 14, 2020 at 2:00 pm.
When you stop borrowing a license, the borrowed license will no longer be used automatically on start up.
This action will not return the borrowed license.
To stop borrowing a license on Windows, open the LMTOOLS utility and switch to the Borrowing tab. Click on Don’t Borrow Anymore Today.
To stop borrowing a license on macOS or Linux, open a terminal and change directory to where lmutil is installed and execute the following command:
lmutil lmborrow -clear
A borrowed license is automatically returned to the network license server on the date and time specified when you borrowed the license. However, you can also return the license manually before this date.
To return a borrowed license on Windows, open the LMTOOLS utility and switch to the Borrowing tab. Click on Return Borrowed Licenses Early.
To return a borrowed license early on macOS or Linux, open a terminal and change directory to where lmutil is installed and execute the following command:
lmutil lmborrow -return
