Define a sketch symbol

1. Open a drawing file or drawing template.
2. On the ribbon, click Manage tab Define panel Insert Sketch Symbol . Select Define New Symbol from the drop-down menu.

   Alternatively, right-click the Sketch Symbols folder in the browser and select Define New Symbol.

3. Use the commands on the Sketch tab to create the symbol.
4. To add an insert point to the sketch,
   • Click a point in the sketch to select it.
   • On the ribbon, click Sketch tab Format panel Set Insertion Point Grip.. A sketch symbol can have only one insert point.
5. To add connection points to the sketch,
   • Click a point in the sketch to select it.
   • On the ribbon, click Sketch tab Format panel Connection Point..
   • Add as many connection points as needed.
6. Right-click and select Save Sketch Symbol. Enter the desired symbol name in the dialog box. The symbol is added to a Sketch Symbols folder in the browser.

Optional method to save sketch symbols to an external library

1. Right-click on a symbol in your Model browser and select Save to Symbol Library.

   To save all your symbols within your model's sketch to a sketch symbol library, right-click on the Sketch Symbol node in your Model browser and select Save All to Symbol Library.

2. Choose a library from the menu and Save.
3. If no library exists, select the Create a New Library icon to create a new external library. Select the folder icon to create a subfolder within the selected library if desired.
Note:
• To retain your sketch symbols folder structure to symbol libraries, click the Retain Resource Folder Structure check box.
• To modify your libraries, the Sketch Symbol Library location is saved to C:Users\Public\Documents\Autodesk\Inventor [version]\Design Data\Symbol Library. You can add, delete, or rename libraries here.
• Two sketch symbols cannot be saved to the symbol library with the same name. A Paste Resource dialog box displays prompting you to create a new or replace an existing symbol with the new symbol to prevent duplicate symbol names from being created.

Reorder prompted entries in a sketch symbol

1. Right -click the sketch symbol in Drawing Resources, and select Reorder Prompted Entries from the menu.
2. In the Reorder Prompted Entries dialog box, move or drag prompted entries to define the desired order.
3. Click OK to close the dialog box.

   When you insert a sketch symbol, the Prompted Texts dialog box displays the prompted entries in the defined order.
