Edit components in place

Edit components in the parent assembly.

To edit a part in a subassembly, activate the subassembly and select and activate the part to edit. In an active subassembly, you can delete a part, change its ground status, display degrees of freedom, or designate a component as adaptive. You cannot directly edit parts.

Note: The Make Part and Make Components commands are blocked during an edit place if the part has more than one model state.
  1. In the graphics window or the browser, double-click the part to edit.

When you edit a component in place, the shaded display shades the active part. All other components display transparent.

If the part exists in memory, it is opened in a separate window. A part is considered open in memory if any of the following conditions exist:

    • The part is edited and closed without saving.
    • The part is already open in a separate window.
    • The part is opened in the background using the API.
  2. Right-click the part, and then select Edit Feature.
  3. Use the sketch and feature commands to add, edit, or delete features.
  4. Save the part file. The changes you make are reflected in all occurrences of the part in the assembly file (and other assemblies that use the part).
  5. When you finish editing, on the Quick Access toolbar choose one of the following options to specify where you want to continue editing:
    • Return - returns to the previous editing environment.
    • Return to Parent - returns to the parent component in the browser.
    • Return to Top - returns to the top-level assembly in the browser.
    • Right-click and select Finish Edit to continue working in the current file.

To choose another component to edit, select it in the browser, right-click, and then select Edit. If you prefer, double-click the component in the browser.

Note: An adaptive part can resize in response to changes in size or position of other components.
