To Create a Custom Assembly Template

To streamline assembly modeling, create a custom assembly template file with default values for your projects and workflows.

What's New: 2020

An assembly file becomes a template when it is saved to the Templates\%Language% folder, where language is the installed language pack(s).

  1. Access: Get Started tab New Assembly.
  2. To create an assembly file from a default template:
    • Change the size of the origin workplanes to accommodate the average sizes of the parts you create.
    • Set the default units of measurement.
    • Define the columns and format for the bill of materials.
    • Define commonly used parameters or link to a spreadsheet of parameters.
    • Define specific materials, appearances, and lighting styles.
  3. Set the properties to cost center, project name, or manager.
  4. Properties are used to find, track, and manage files. The properties are also used to add and maintain information automatically in title blocks, parts lists, and bills of material.

  5. Save the file in the Autodesk\Autodesk Inventor [version]\Templates folder or to a subfolder of Templates.

Note: The file standard.iam in the Templates\%Language% folder is the default assembly template. To replace the default template, rename it to save the original file, then save the new file with the standard.iam name.
