Harness data imported from other applications into Cable and Harness is often incomplete or incorrect. Data from 2D applications such as AutoCAD Electrical, do not provide information that the 3D environment in the Autodesk Inventor application requires to create a complete harness definition. To complete the information, you must create references from the imported data to definitions in the Cable & Harness library, and reference electrical parts to a 3D model.
Once the harness data is imported using Cable and Harness tab Manage panel Import Harness Data , you can use the Imported Harness Data dialog box to:
- view the imported data
- identify and correct any issues with the data
- add additional information to provide a complete definition
The easiest way to fix an error condition is to first filter the browser to include error conditions only, view the issue description and solution, and then perform the recommended action.
Electrical parts and pins and their RefDes must exist in the assembly prior to importing harness data. To ensure the import is not interrupted due to missing parts, use Cable and Harness tab Manage panel Review Harness Data to generate a list of all the electrical parts that are defined in the import file, along with any missing RefDes information.
Note: If file or format errors exist that prevent the file from importing, a message dialog box is displayed with a description of the issue. If errors exist, but the file still imports, click View Log for details.
View issue descriptions and solutions
An issue description and recommended solution is available for any item with an error condition. All error conditions are indicated with an icon.
- Optionally, in the Imported Harness Data dialog box click Filter and select Show Issues Only from the menu.
- Right-click any listed item with an error condition, and then select Issue Description from the context menu.
- Use the scroll bars to read the entire message.
- Click Close.
- Optionally, correct the issue as instructed.
Rename harness objects
Rename the harness object (electrical part pin, splice pin, wire ID, cable ID, or conductor) to correct the error if:
- the name or ID was not specified
- the object was not found in the library
- Right-click the item in question, and then select the Rename <harness object> from the context menu. For example, when renaming a wire you would select Rename Wire ID.
- In the browser text box, enter the new name.
- Press ENTER.
- If appropriate, add the renamed item to the Cable & Harness Library.
Note: Valid names for splice pins include 1 and 2. Any other name or number will cause an error condition.
Add imported data to Cable & Harness Library
Add a harness object (virtual part, wire, or cable) to the Cable & Harness library if the imported definition was not found in the library.
- Optionally, in the Imported Harness Data dialog box click Filter and select Show Issues Only from the menu.
- Right-click the item in question, and then select Add to Cable & Harness Library.
- In the Cable & Harness Library dialog box, add any missing information, and then click OK.
- Click Close.
Replace imported data with data from the Cable & Harness Library
Choose a harness object from the Cable & Harness Library if the imported definition:
- was not specified
- was not found in the library
You may also choose to replace the imported object with another object from the Cable & Harness library.
- Right-click the item in question, and then select Choose from Cable & Harness Library.
- From the Select Library Definition dialog box, navigate to and select a harness object, and then click OK.
- Click Close.
Assign imported harness data to an existing electrical part or splice
Use Assign to an existing Electrical Part or Splice if the RefDes for the imported electrical part was not assigned to an electrical part or splice in the assembly file. You can also use this option to change the current reference.
- Right-click the item in question, and then select Assign to an existing Electrical Part or Assign to an existing Splice from the context menu.
- In the Select <harness object> dialog box, click the Select command if not already selected.
- In the graphics window or browser, click the electrical part to use.
Note: Only electrical parts that do not have a RefDes are available.
- Click OK.
Choose an existing electrical part for the imported harness data
Use Choose from an existing Electrical Part or Splice if the RefDes was not specified for the imported data. If a RefDes was specified, you can use this option to change the current reference.
- Right-click the item in question, and then select Choose from existing Electrical Parts or Choose from existing Splice from the context menu.
- In the Select <harness object> dialog box, click the Select command if not already selected.
- In the graphics window or browser, click the electrical part to use.
Note: Only electrical parts with assigned RefDes' are available.
- Click OK.
Choose conductor from Import Cable
Use Choose Conductor from Import Cable if the imported conductor ID:
- Was not specified.
- Is not unique in the imported harness data.
- Optionally, in the Imported Harness Data dialog box click Filter and select Show Issues Only from the menu.
- Right-click the item in question, and then select Choose Conductor from Import Cable from the context menu.
- In the Select Conductor dialog box, click the conductor ID to use for the imported cable wire.
- Click OK.
