Duplicating with symmetry

In this video, learn about how to combine the Duplicate tool with the symmetry plane or radial symmetry to quickly build symmetrical pieces for your creation.

Duplicate along and off the symmetry plane

You can use the Duplicate tool to duplicate curves and surfaces along the symmetry plane.

  1. Select the Duplicate tool.
  2. With the Tool Hand, hover the stylus over the object and hold the trigger.
  3. Drag the duplicated object to the desired position on the symmetry plane.
  4. Release the trigger to place.

You can also duplicate curves and surfaces off the symmetry plane to create symmetrical copies on both sides.

  1. Select the Duplicate tool.
  2. Scale the stylus by pressing up and down on the Tool Hand to select all the objects you want to duplicate.
  3. Hold the Tool Hand trigger and drag the duplicated copies off the symmetry plane. A symmetrical copy of the objects is also created on the other side of the symmetry plane.
  4. Release the trigger to place.

Duplicate with plane symmetry and radial symmetry

By using the Duplicate tool with radial and plane symmetry, you can create a set of rims for a car's wheel assemblies by doing the following:

  1. Use the symmetry plane as a flat drawing surface
  2. Use radial symmetry to create the wheel rim design with curves and circles.
  3. Use the Duplicate tool with plane symmetry to create copies of the wheel rims along and off the symmetry plane.
